BRS/Rea Vaya
The Rea Vaya project is a public transportation initiative by the City of Joburg and fully endorsed and supported by the National Department of Transport.
Construction on the routes is still under way in some areas. Once it is up and running, the project is set to transform public transport in the city.
The Rea Vaya route from Alexandra to Sandton will be operational in 2018/2019. The city’s plan is to complete the public transport loop (Fredman Dr, Fifth Street and Rivonia Road) and install commuter shelters along this loop in the 2017/2018 financial year.
A total of three new bridges is set to connect Sandton Central with surrounding areas.
Work on the Zandspruit Bridge has already been completed. This is a dedicated bridge between Alexandra and Sandton, situated near to the Marlboro off-ramp on the M1 highway. The bridge was widened to improve traffic mobility in an area notorious for bottlenecks. It is already open to pedestrians and will be used by Rea Vaya busses when they become operational.
Completion of the two bridges over the M1 highway is set for completion by the end of 2017. These are the Marlboro Rea Vaya Bus and Pedestrian Bridge and the Grayston Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridge.
The Marlboro Rea Vaya bus and pedestrian bridge is almost complete and is for exclusive use by Rea Vaya buses and pedestrians. It will launch in September/October 2017. The bridge is already open for pedestrians. Rea Vaya buses will have exclusive use of the bridge when the Rea Vaya Phase 1C(a) operations begin in October 2018. The bridge will make it possible for buses and pedestrians to move swiftly from Johannesburg CBD via Wynberg and Alexandra over the M1 and into Sandton Central.
The Grayston pedestrian and cyclist bridge is a non-motorist bridge currently under construction over the M1 highway at Grayston Drive. It will be completed by October 2017 and will provide a convenient and safe walking and cycling trip for people moving between Alexandra, Wynberg and Sandton Central daily. The bridge is part of a five kilometre dedicated walk and cycle route that starts in No 3 Square in the heart of Alexandra and ends in Sandton Central. The route also intersects with the Watt Street Rea Vaya station next to the Pan Africa Mall.
