Malcolm Bone takes the helm at Indaba Hotel, Spa & Conference Centre

Born and raised in Johannesburg, Malcolm’s career began after completing two years of military service. He joined the Southern Sun Hotel Management internship programme through Wits Hotel School, starting his journey at the Johannesburg Sun before moving to the Sandton Sun, where he earned his first management position as Assistant Front Office Manager. Rising steadily through the ranks, he eventually became General Manager within the Southern Sun group — a role he has since redefined at Indaba Hotel.

For Malcolm, hospitality has never been just a job — it’s a calling. He believes his role is to inspire his team, nurture future industry leaders, and foster a culture of excellence in service. “Hospitality is about connection,” he shares. “We’re in the business of making people feel seen, valued, and cared for.”

Now leading the multi-faceted Indaba Hotel since 2024, Malcolm oversees a property renowned for its conferencing facilities, spa, and culinary experiences. But like the rest of the world, his leadership was put to the test during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Managing a property through Covid-19 was by far the biggest challenge of my career,” he reflects. “It was tough, but the lessons learned have changed the way we operate – and for the better.”

While the industry continues its recovery, Malcolm remains optimistic. “Some regions are thriving again, thanks to the return of international travel. Hospitality remains a vital part of the South African economy,” he says.

Away from the boardroom, he finds joy in family and the outdoors. He shares a close bond with his wife Debbie and their two sons, Dylan and Kian. “Hospitality families learn to be flexible and supportive,” he says. “I’m lucky to have that support.” These days, you might also find him in the garden, nurturing bonsai trees or hitting the golf course with his family. “Spending time in nature is how I recharge.”

He’s also an avid rugby fan, with Danie Gerber and Pieter-Steph Du Toit topping his list of favourite players. His all-time travel favourite is the Seychelles — the setting of his honeymoon — though he holds a deep appreciation for the history and culture of London, and the charm of Paris. His dream day? Living the life of Cristiano Ronaldo, just for a taste of the extraordinary.

Malcolm Bone attributes much of his success to working with integrity and perseverance. “Believe in yourself. Don’t give up when it gets hard — push through.” He credits John De Canha and Richard Weilers as mentors who shaped his career and calls them two of South Africa’s finest hoteliers.

When asked what advice he has for those entering the industry, he doesn’t sugarcoat it: “Be prepared for long hours and hard work. This industry demands that you put others first — but the gratitude you receive makes it all worth it.”

With a steady hand, strong values, and a deep love for hospitality, Malcolm Bone continues to steer the Indaba Hotel towards innovation and excellence — always with a smile, and always with integrity.
